Capturing hybrid vigor for lentil breeding

Conventional breeding has produced low levels of yield increase in lentils (Lens culinaris ssp. Medik.) recent decades. As hybrids have led to large increases other crops, we examined the possibility using lentils. In 52 between Australian commercial cultivars and lines from a global collection cultivated wild accessions, found 15 had seed hybrid vigor, with better parent heterosis (BPH) gains ranging 10.4 125%. Flowering time, size, cotyledon color, branch number were important but not critical for level vigor yield. Plant height at 28 days post sowing (dps) could be an indicator grown glasshouse conditions. absence male sterile lentils, used high-yielding combinations program repeated selfing selection produce stable, (Hybrid Mimics) grain yields similar F1 hybrids, avoiding limitation advantage generation. Seed increased successive generations (F3–F5); F4 plants close that hybrid. Our results indicate there is potential lentil accessed through mimic selection. This method dependent on sterility can initiated hand-pollinated hybrids. Hybrid may applicable wide range crops.
